Leap Year
I work on SAS and Teradata. Some kind of databases. I was reading data from Teradata into SAS and figured out that dates or leap years to be precise are treated differently on both systems. To my surprise, year 4000, 8000 or years divisible 4000 are not leap years in SAS but they are in Teradata. I could find a fix but then I 'wiki'fied leap year and found this.
The Gregorian calendar, the current standard calendar in most of the world, adds a 29th day to February in all years evenly divisible by four, except for centennial years (those ending in -00), which receive the extra day only if they are evenly divisible by 400. Thus 1600, 2000 and 2400 are leap years but 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200 and 2300 are not. If the Year qualifies the following condition then its a leap year (Wikipedia)

Time, Quality and Globalization
It's been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish company. Working for them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any project here takes 2 years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple and brilliant. It's a rule.
Globalized processes have caused in us (all over the world) a general sense of searching for immediate results. Therefore, we have come to posses a need to see immediate results. This contrasts greatly with the slow movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand, debate, debate, debate, hold x number of meetings and work with a slowdown scheme. At the end, this always yields better results.
Said in other words:
1. Sweden is about the size of San Pablo, a state in Brazil.
2. Sweden has 2 million inhabitants.
3. Stockholm has 500,000 people.
4. Volvo, Escania, Ericsson, Electrolux, Nokia are some of its renowned companies. Volvo supplies the NASA.
The first time I was in Sweden, one of my colleagues picked me up at the hotel every morning. It was September, bit cold and snowy. We would arrive early at the company and he would park far away from the entrance (2000 employees drive their car to work). The first day, I didn't say anything, either the second or third. One morning I asked, "Do you have a fixed parking space? I've noticed we park far from the entrance even when there are no other cars in the lot." To which he replied, "Since we're here early we'll have time to walk, and whoever gets in late will be late and need a place closer to the door. Don't you think? Imagine my face.
Nowadays, there's a movement in Europe named Slow Food. This movement establishes that people should eat and drink slowly, with enough time to taste their food, spend time with the family, friends, without rushing. Slow Food is against its counterpart: the spirit of Fast Food and what it stands for as a lifestyle. Slow Food is the basis for a bigger movement called Slow Europe, as mentioned by Business Week.
Basically, the movement questions the sense of "hurry" and "craziness" generated by globalization, fueled by the desire of "having in quantity" (life status) versus "having with quality", "life quality" or the "quality of being". French people, even though they work 35 hours per week, are more productive than Americans or British. Germans have established 28.8 hour workweeks and have seen their productivity been driven up by 20%. This slow attitude has brought forth the US's attention, pupils of the fast and the "do it now!".
This no-rush attitude doesn't represent doing less or having a lower productivity. It means working and doing things with greater quality, productivity, perfection, with attention to detail and less stress. It means reestablishing family values, friends, free and leisure time. Taking the "now", present and concrete, versus the "global", undefined and anonymous. It means taking humans' essential values, the simplicity of living.
It stands for a less coercive work environment, more happy, lighter and more productive where humans enjoy doing what they know best how to do. It's time to stop and think on how companies need to develop serious quality with no-rush that will increase productivity and the quality of products and services, without losing the essence of spirit.
In the movie, Scent of a Woman, there's a scene where Al Pacino asks a girl to dance and she replies, "I can't, my boyfriend will be here any minute now". To which Al responds, "A life is lived in an instant". Then they dance to a tango.
Many of us live our lives running behind time, but we only reach it when we die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing to be on time. Others are so anxious of living the future that they forget to live the present, which is the only time that truly exists. We all have equal time. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one of us does with our time. As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".

Twenty20 Cricket
Life has become faster these days. We are getting into habit of doing things quick and fast. Cricket is no more an exception. People raise their eyebrows when they are being told a game of cricket can last for 5 days without a result!!! But now you a new version of game of cricket which is more exciting, a bit biased and you just have to spend three hours of your life and you are guaranteed an outcome as well!!
Its called Twenty20 Cricket.
Its simple! 20 Overs per inning per side(some time saved). First team will score runs and set the target. The second team will chase it. You will not have long breaks between, only 10 minutes break (some more time saved). After a wicket goes down, the new batsman wont come out right from the dressing room. Instead there are dug outs next to the boundary line as you have in baseball (some extra time saved). However, the new version of the game is bit biased and favors batsmen. Most of the times the bowlers are butchered as the rules are very tight for bowlers. The margin for error for bowler is minimal or I would say its zero. If a bowler bowls a front foot no ball the very next ball he bowls is called a free hit where in a batsman can not get out except for run out.
I think they should find something like this in bowler's favor as well. For example, two runs are cut down from team's total if a wicket goes down except for a run out or if a wicket goes down then the next ball should be counted without its being actually bowled.
Its a matter of creating a balance between batting and bowling. All and all this form of cricket will get popular in the countries like US where normally the team games finish in 4-5 hours. Let hope that cricket excites more and more countries and it becomes a truly global game.

Kayaking
It all started at 7 in the morning and it all started on time :). We took I-44 to head to Huzzah Valley 90 miles from South County St. Louis. Yes, we wanted to have a shot at Kayaking and with no experience headed towards destination.
Huzzah valley was a typical country side, and you can notice that by the language the people speak there. I mean it was very difficult to understand what the people speak.
We reached there by 830 and hired 3 kayaks. Kayak is kind of a flat boat with only one person can sit in it. I was new to this kind of adventure. But I believe I have enough sportsperson in me that helped me to get on track very fast. I understood the technique very fast and it was fun them. That was my first fdriving experience in water :)
The deal was minimum 6 miles and max 10 miles. It was a bit overcast day and that did helped as we enjoyed the kayaking and the surroundings. The water was as shallow as 6 inches to as deep as 5 feet (Thats too less but i dont know swimming and neither had life jacket.).
And then came a moment when all of sudden there was a bit heavy downstream current. I lost the control and banged into the bank. And i tried to get my kayak to get out of it and splashhhhhhhhhh... it toppled. Thankfully it was not so deep and i got completely wet below waist. That taught me the lesson and then it was anice journey throughout.. 6 miles 3 and a half hours...phewww!!

Google has always been unique with its gadgets. The recent thing that they have released is a very good example of customer targetting. Its called Indic Transliteration. You can write in hindi/devnagri. And I am sure that it will soon percolate down to Google Talk and we can chat in Hindi.
Along with this they have also released a new gadget that you can add to your personalised google. It is called Indic OnScreen Keyboard.
And last but not the least, we now have the indian version google labs. Check it out.

Chak De India
WOW!! Was my first reaction when I came out of the cinema hall. I am really amazed by the fact that a hindi film industry can think of the subjects other than love story. Its Chak De India
All the girls have done a fabulous job in the movie. Shahrukh Khan has again ruled and looks pretty good in the new character. I like him he is not a typical love-story hero. Watch Swades for that matter, lovely movie.
Well, the best part however of this movie was the casting. I have seen for the first time when any competition in Hindi film is not at all looking cheaper. In fact they have shot the entire Word Cup in Australia!!! There are as many as 6 international teams whom they have casted in the movie with their national spportwear (Not a joke). The complete World Cup setup really looks real.
Good Movie! Must watch! At least its better as a change in the herd of boring hindiloave stories and folks its based on the TREU STORY
Next up is (Dhan Dhana Dhan GOAL)

e-Banking

Penalty due to non-payment of bill is not new to anyone of us. And quite obviously, who likes the long procedure of writing a cheque, standing in a long queue and then ensuring that the particular amount is available in your bank account? Similarly, Mr Sharma, who is on business tour for at least 25 days a month, finds it difficult to clear his dues on time because of his busy schedule.
He, like many of us, was possibly not aware of the online services, banks are offering these days. With just a click, all his dues would have been cleared long back. However, it's never too late to mend.
Indian banks are trying to make your life easier. Not just bill payment, you can make investments, shop or buy tickets and plan a holiday at your fingertips. In fact, sources from ICICI Bank tell us, "Our Internet banking base has been growing at an exponential pace over the last few years. Currently around 78 per cent of the bank's customer base is registered for Internet banking."
To get started, all you need is a computer with a modem or other dial-up device, a checking account with a bank that offers online service and the patience to complete about a one-page application--which can usually be done online. You can avail the following services.
Bill payment service
Each bank has tie-ups with various utility companies, service providers and insurance companies, across the country. You can facilitate payment of electricity and telephone bills, mobile phone, credit card and insurance premium bills.
To pay your bills, all you need to do is complete a simple one-time registration for each biller. You can also set up standing instructions online to pay your recurring bills, automatically. One-time standing instruction will ensure that you don't miss out on your bill payments due to lack of time. Most interestingly, the bank does not charge customers for online bill payment.
Fund transfer
You can transfer any amount from one account to another of the same or any another bank. Customers can send money anywhere in India. Once you login to your account, you need to mention the payees's account number, his bank and the branch. The transfer will take place in a day or so, whereas in a traditional method, it takes about three working days. ICICI Bank says that online bill payment service and fund transfer facility have been their most popular online services.
Credit card customers
Credit card users have a lot in store. With Internet banking, customers can not only pay their credit card bills online but also get a loan on their cards. Not just this, they can also apply for an additional card, request a credit line increase and God forbid if you lose your credit card, you can report lost card online.
Railway pass
This is something that would interest all the aam janta. Indian Railways has tied up with ICICI bank and you can now make your railway pass for local trains online. The pass will be delivered to you at your doorstep. But the facility is limited to Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Surat and Pune. The bank would just charge Rs 10 + 12.24 per cent of service tax.
Investing through Internet banking
Opening a fixed deposit account cannot get easier than this. You can now open an FD online through funds transfer. Online banking can also be a great friend for lazy investors.
Now investors with interlinked demat account and bank account can easily trade in the stock market and the amount will be automatically debited from their respective bank accounts and the shares will be credited in their demat account.
Moreover, some banks even give you the facility to purchase mutual funds directly from the online banking system.
So you need not worry about filling those big forms for mutual funds, they will now be just a few clicks away. Nowadays, most leading banks offer both online banking and demat account. However if you have your demat account with independent share brokers, then you need to sign a special form, which will link your two accounts.
Recharging your prepaid phone
Now you no longer need to rush to the vendor to recharge your prepaid phone, every time your talk time runs out. Just top-up your prepaid mobile cards by logging in to Internet banking. By just selecting your operator's name, entering your mobile number and the amount for recharge, your phone is again back in action within few minutes.
Shopping at your fingertips
Leading banks have tie ups with various shopping websites. With a range of all kind of products, you can shop online and the payment is also made conveniently through your account. You can also buy railway and air tickets through Internet banking.

Inspite of so many facilities that Internet banking offers us, we still seem to trust our traditional method of banking and is reluctant to use online banking. But here are few cases where Internet banking will turn out to be a better option in terms of saving your money.
'Stop payment' done through Internet banking will not cost any extra fees but when done through the branch, the bank may charge you Rs 50 per cheque plus the service tax.
Through Internet banking, you can check your transactions at any time of the day, and as many times as you want to.
On the other hand, in a traditional method, you get quarterly statements from the bank and if you request for a statement at your required time, it may turn out to be an expensive affair. The branch may charge you Rs 25 per page, which includes only 30 transactions. Moreover, the bank branch would take eight days to deliver it at your doorstep.
If the fund transfer has to be made outstation, where the bank does not have a branch, the bank would demand outstation charges. Whereas with the help of online banking, it will be absolutely free for you.
As per the Internet and Mobile Association of India's report on online banking 2006, "There are many advantages of online banking. It is convenient, it isn't bound by operational timings, there are no geographical barriers and the services can be offered at a miniscule cost."

Customers should never share personal information like PIN numbers, passwords etc with anyone, including employees of the bank. It is important that documents that contain confidential information are safeguarded. PIN or password mailers should not be stored, the PIN and/or passwords should be changed immediately and memorised before destroying the mailers.
Customers are advised not to provide sensitive account-related information over unsecured e-mails or over the phone. Take simple precautions like changing the ATM PIN and online login and transaction passwords on a regular basis. Also ensure that the logged in session is properly signed out.

Its really calm and serene place to be. The best place probably to witness the sunset.
